Multi-tools have become every day carry items for many Americans.  The immediate availability of a variety of tools in a compact package appeals to people.

Over the years, I’ve used multi-tools from most of the major brands, such as Leatherman, Gerber, Victorinox, and Shrade.  Gerber and Leatherman seem to be the most popular brands.  Both also have a solid track record for quality.

Of the multi-tools that I’ve used, I would have to give the Victorinox Swisstool the highest rating in terms of overall quality.  The quality of construction and design are obvious.  The blade locking system on the Swisstool is the best on the market, in my opinion.  The only negative comment that I have for the Swisstool are that they overly polish the tools so that the flat-blade screwdrivers have their corners rounded.

Gerber multi-tools have been on the market for many years.  Overall, they are very serviceable tools.  Their tool quality seems to be less than optimal, however.  I have found their Phillips-head screwdrivers to round off quickly, due to their cast construction.  The Gerbers are probably the best choice for people who need quick access to pliars, since they can be deployed with only a flick of the wrist.

The brand that I continually carry is the Leatherman multi-tool.  I have found Leatherman to consistantly produce a high quality multi-tool.  I especially like their flat-blade screw drivers and hollowground knife blades.  The newer models from Leatherman, such as the Kick and Fuse use a well-designed locking mechanism that is more user friendly than the original Leatherman blade locking system.

Overall, you would be hard pressed to go wrong with any of the three brands discussed.  Examine the models available from the manufacturers and choose the one that best suits your needs.
