Surefire Optimus and UB3T Invictus Flashlights Update

UPDATE June 2011: The UA2, UB2, and UB3 flashlights were non-starters but Surefire has finally released the UB3T Invictus! The UB3T is a variable power tactical flashlight with eight adjustable output settings from 2 to 600 lumens. The output settings are changed by turning the bezel. The UB3T runs on three 3-volt CR123A batteries. At maximum output (600 lumens) the run time is approximately 1.7 hours. On the lowest setting (2 lumens) the run time is approximately 150 hours.

Like the originally touted Surefire Optimus and Invictus flashlights, the UB3T retains it's low battery light indicator, a first for Surefire. The UB3T also has SOS and strobe modes that are selected by rotating the bezel, just like changing the output.

With an overall length of almost 9 inches, a bezel diameter of 2.5 inches, and weighing in at 12 ounces, the UB3T is no miniscule flashlight.

Surefire wisely chose to put a tailcap like the L1, LX2, and A2L on the UB3T. A light press activates the low setting and a further press of the tailcap turns on the highest setting. Likewise, turning the tailcap turns on the low output setting permanently, whichever setting it is switched to. Turning the tailcap further permanently turns on the high output setting. The output selector also has an off position to turn the flashlight off for storage.

The UB3T is available for immediate orders. It retails for $695.

For those that haven't heard, the 2009 Surefire catalog does not include the UA2 Optimus or UB2 Invictus.

There is no official word explaining the delay or postponement of these two highly anticipated flashlights.

The only slight ray of hope that we have is that the catalog does show a UB3 Invictus with a maximum output of 350 lumens.   Again, there is no word on its' availability.  Hopefully the UB3 won't go the way of the UA2 or UB2.

If Surefire got ahead of themselves by publishing them in the 2008 catalog, here's hoping that they can overcome any production issues and the Optimus and Invictus will be available in the future.

In the meantime, checkout other great flashlights from Surefire.
