Surefire Sonic Defenders

While ear plugs aren’t EDC items for most people, there are people who use them daily due to their jobs, hobbies, or other activities that expose them to loud or prolonged noise.

When it comes to ear plugs, Surefire is not typically a company that you would associate.  However, Surefire purchased the EarPro brand of hearing products a couple of years ago and began offering hearing protection products.

I recently bought a pair of Surefire’s EP4 Sonic Defenders to try out.  Surefire advertises the EP4 as having a noise reduction rating of 19 decibels.  While that is not as much reduction as traditional foam ear plugs, the Sonic Defenders are not supposed to reduce hearing at normal conversational levels.

Upon putting the Sonic Defenders in place, I noticed that the ambient noise level was reduced, albeit not as much as traditional ear plugs.  I also noticed that they give the wearer the muffled feeling common with traditional ear plugs.

What impressed me was the comfort of the Sonic Defenders.  The material that they’re made of conforms nicely to the ear and mostly eliminates the discomfort of most other ear plugs.

Priced at $13.95 MSRP, I feel that they are a worthwhile purchase.  If you are looking for ear plugs that don’t block as much lower decibel sound then the Surefire EP4 Sonic Defenders may work for you.

I think earplugs are edc items for more people than firearms are. In the most populous parts of the country, construction workers and musicians far outnumber people with carry permits.

I like the paraffin style plugs myself, because they can be arranged to fully or partly block sound depending on how loud it is and whether or not I need to talk to people. I usually tear them in half rather than using a separate one for each ear. They tend to come in convenient four and sixteen packs I can carry and hand out to friends as needed if we go someplace loud.

I haven’t used the paraffin plugs. But the most comfortable ones I have worn are the original EAR foam plugs. They are great and can be worn for long periods of time without discomfort.

[…] a previous post I reviewed the Surefire Sonic Defender earplugs that mechanically block loud sounds while allowing lower decibel sounds to reach the wearer’s ear. […]
