Suunto Core Outdoor Watch

Question: I am looking to purchase a Suunto watch to wear during outdoor activities such as hiking, backpacking, and mountain climbing. Looking online, there are many different models and I am confused over which ones to look at. Any help is appreciated. Mike from Salt Lake City.

Answer: I am planning to do some reviews of Suunto's excellent watches very soon. Be sure to look for them in the next couple of months. One of the most popular Suunto watches is currently the Core. The Core was designed to be a new version of the popular Vector and includes most of the features that Suunto wearers look for at an affordable price.

The Core's basic functions include time, barometer, compass, and altimeter. In actuality, however, each of those functions does much more. For example, using the barometer function, the Core can notify you of a coming storm. The altimeter function likewise does more than tell you the altitude. It can also tell display your depth to 10 meters.

The Core also includes a digital compass which works like a traditional one. The rotating bezel can be used to set a bearing to follow.

The time functions of the Core include 12 or 24 hour time, a countdown timer, alarm, date display, and predicted times for sunrise and sunset. The blacklight function allows the wearer to see the watch when ambient light is not enough.

The Core is water resistant to a depth of 100 meters and has a two year warranty.

The Core uses the common CR2032 batteries as it's power source. Typical battery life is 12 to 18 months, depending on use.

Best of all, the Core is available in many different bezel and band color combinations and materials to match your style. The options include black and orange, black and yellow, aluminum and brown, light green, light black, black and red, aluminum and aluminum, and an all black model that's sometimes referred to as the "military" model.

Prices range from $200 to $350 depending on the style of Core you choose.
